Advantages, disadvantages and differences of luxury vinyl and laminate flooring

In many people's eyes, laminate flooring and vinyl flooring are the same. Although this was true 20 years ago, the differences of the two decades divided the flooring solutions into different camps, especially the introduction of advanced vinyl flooring.

To better illustrate the comparable characteristics of high-quality vinyl flooring and composite flooring, let's divide the flooring into four quantifiable qualities: appearance and style, durability and stability, application and cost.

  Appearance and style

In terms of design integrity, vinyl and laminate are relatively uniform. Since both are made using 3D printing technology, they can reproduce the appearance and style of natural materials (such as wood and stone), but at a low cost. Vinyl and laminates can be customized and designed indefinitely, providing the versatility needed to complete any interior design project.

  Durability and stability

Before discussing the durability and stability of high-quality vinyl and laminates, we should define the following terms because they look similar:

Durability: the hardness of the floor, especially the wear-resistant layer of the top layer. The more durable the floor solution, the wider its range of use.

Stability: depends on the overall thickness and / or layer composition and the quality of the material. Stable flooring materials maintain their shape and size to resist moisture and / or climate change.

Vinyl and laminates are constructed in a similar way, usually with a wear-resistant layer, photographic image and underlay system. But the composition will be different.

Laminates are usually made of HDF or high-density fiberboard, which is made of recycled hardwood. Laminates are not waterproof, so it is not recommended to install this product in high humidity or humid places or places such as supermarkets or restaurants that often overflow. Laminates are preferably installed in climate controlled areas.

Vinyl, however, is a very different story. Storage vinyl, especially a hard closed cell vinyl, makes the product more water-resistant and ideal for high humidity areas. Vinyl does not require sealant, but it is recommended to use sealant in high humidity areas to increase the protective layer.

Laminates are hard products, but often hollow. It is important that the floor below be level. Vinyl has the ability to expand and contract, so it is an ideal choice for densely populated areas. Moreover, both are easy to clean. Read more about LVT in high traffic areas.

According to the comments on durability and stability, the application of laminates cannot be fully compared with the multi-faceted and multi-purpose functions of high-quality vinyl flooring. Because of its vulnerability to moisture, climate and physical damage (and the lack of a way to repair this damage), laminates are not as good as vinyl in a variety of commercial floor units, especially in areas susceptible to high humidity and high humidity.

All industries can benefit from the ethylene base plate. On the other hand, laminates are not ideal for industries with high humidity and humidity, and are prone to overflow and exposure to water.

The gap between premium vinyl and laminates has finally narrowed. Premium vinyl costs between $0.50 and $5 per square foot, laminate matches and even sheet matches (although at a lower price), and commercial products can cost between $2 and $5 per square foot. With such similar prices and different qualities, the choice seems unreasonable. Given its flexibility in design and application, premium vinyl will win.
