Hard vinyl flooring: what are the main differences between SPC and WPC?

Thanks to new technology, luxury vinyl base plate provides designers with more choices and possibilities. One of the latest luxury vinyl products is the hard core luxury vinyl floor, a luxury vinyl floor that consists of stronger or "rigid" cores to increase durability. Hard core luxury vinyl is a glueless format with a click lock installation system.

There are two types of hard core luxury Vinyl: stone plastic composite (SPC) and wood plastic composite (WPC). When it comes to SPC flooring and WPC flooring, it's important to note that although both have a variety of features, the differences between the two should be taken into account when determining which is the best fit for your space or interior design project.

SPC stands for stone plastic (or polymer) composite, whose core is usually composed of about 60% calcium carbonate (limestone), PVC and plasticizer.

WPC, on the other hand, represents wood plastic (or polymer) composites. Its core is usually composed of PVC, calcium carbonate, plasticizer, foaming agent and wood like or wooden materials (such as wood powder). WPC manufacturers, originally named for the wood they make up, are increasingly using wood like plasticizers to replace a variety of wood.

The composition of WPC and SPC is relatively similar, although SPC has much more calcium carbonate (limestone) than WPC, which is the source of "s" in SPC. It has more stone content.

To better understand the similarities and differences between SPC and WPC, it's helpful to look at the following quantifiable qualities: look and feel, durability and stability, application and cost.

  Appearance and style

There is not much difference between SPC and WPC in the design that everyone provides. With today's digital printing technology, SPC and WPC tiles and boards similar to wood, stone, ceramics, marble and unique finishes are easy to produce on vision and texture.

In addition to design options, recent advances have been made in different format options. Both SPC and WPC flooring can be made in a variety of forms, including wider or longer boards and wider tiles. The length and width of any kind in the same carton is becoming a popular choice.

  Durability and stability

Similar to the dry back luxury vinyl flooring (this is a traditional type of luxury vinyl that requires the installation of adhesives), the SPC and WPC flooring consists of a combination of multiple backing layers. However, unlike dry back floors, both floor options have rigid cores and are hard products around them.

Since the core layer of SPC is composed of limestone, its density is higher than that of WPC, although it is generally thinner. This makes it more durable than WPC. Its high density can better resist scratches or dents of heavy objects or furniture placed on its top, and make it not easy to expand under extreme temperature changes.

An important thing to note is that although SPC and WPC are often sold in a waterproof way, they are actually waterproof. Although neither product is completely waterproof, there will be no local spillage or moisture if properly cleaned within a reasonable time.

  application area

Rigid core products, including WPC and SPC, were originally developed for the commercial market due to their durability. However, because of its ease of installation, design options and durability, homeowners are also starting to use rigid cores. It is important to note that some SPC and WPC products vary from commercial to light commercial, so it is best to always consult the manufacturer for the applicable warranty.

Another highlight of SPC and WPC is that in addition to the easy to install click lock system, they do not need a lot of underfloor preparation before installation. Although it is always a good habit to install it on a flat surface, due to the hard core composition of SPC or WPC floor, floor defects (such as cracks or dents) are more likely to be hidden by SPC or WPC floor.

Moreover, when it comes to comfort, WPC is usually more comfortable and less dense at the foot than SPC because of the foaming agent it usually contains. Therefore, WPC is particularly suitable for the environment where employees or customers often stand up.

In addition to providing more cushioning when walking, the foaming agent in WPC also absorbs more sound than SPC floor, although many manufacturers provide acoustic backing that can be added to SPC. WPC or SPC with acoustic background is very suitable for noise reduction environment, such as classroom or office.

The price of SPC and WPC flooring is similar, although SPC is usually cheaper. In terms of installation cost, both of them are generally comparable because they do not need to use adhesive, and both can be easily installed through their click lock system. Finally, this helps reduce installation time and costs.

There is no obvious winner in which product is better overall. There are many similarities and key differences between WPC and SPC. WPC may be more comfortable and quiet under foot, but SPC has higher density. Choosing the right product really depends on your flooring needs for a specific project or space.

With today's digital technology, SPC and WPC design options are almost unlimited.

Although the price of SPC tends to be cheaper, the cost is almost the same. Ease of installation reduces costs. .

Both are durable and stable, but SPC is generally more durable and compact due to its limestone composition.

Both of them work well in commercial interior space. WPC's sole is softer and quieter, while SPC can better resist scratches or dents.
